Solen was born in a science facility on the outskirts of Vulcan's Forge. His parents were working on a science project on the possibility of finding grains that could grow in deserts (similar to the grain used on Sherman's Planet). His mother went into labor quite suddenly, and the facility doctor felt it unwise to move her during labor.
Solen was raised from age 5 at the then-new colony world of Memory Beta, where his parents were field testing the grain they'd developed. When he was 7, he was bonded to his future wife, T'Ris, the daughter of another Vulcan family on Memory Beta. Their parents had known each other for many years, and it was only logical to bond them together.
Solen was always a curios child, examining and learning about the world around him. He found that he had the ability to organize, and often assisted his parents in their work.
When he was 18, he entered Starfleet Academy, where he studied tactics and engineering.
His first Starfleet assignment was as an ensign in tactics under the famous Captain Hikaru Sulu, where he served with distinction. He was promoted to lieutenant junior grade for his continued hard work, which included finding a way to increase shield capabilities when exploring areas with high gravimetric distortions.
His next posting was to the U.S.S. Yorktown as an Engineer, where he quickly made Gamma Shift chief. When the chief engineer left for a position at Utopia Planitia three years later, the assistant chief engineer was installed as the new chief engineer, and he promptly promoted Solen to the position of assistant chief. Solen was promoted to lieutenant senior grade two years later.
Solen's work on the Yorktown attracted the attention of those in the Starfleet R&D Division, who convinced him to transfer to R&D in 2310, where he spent the next 19 years working on developing starship systems. During this time, he worked his way up to commander.
In the later part of 2329 he went on board the U.S.S. Sacajawea as the executive officer. The Sacajawea was a testbed of several newer developments out of the R&D department, and Starfleet wanted to see how effective a certain combination of sensors, shields, and engines worked out in scout vessels. After a one year trial run, Starfleet was impressed by the results, and Solen was transferred to Utopia Planitia to coordinate the construction of more vessels along the same line, as well as overseeing the construction of other designs to come off of the R&D drawing boards.
In 2342 Solen was promoted to captain, and was soon placed in as an Academy instructor, teaching starship operations.
In 2345, he was placed in command of the U.S.S. Crockett. During his time in command of the Crockett, he was promoted to fleet captain and placed in command of the 23rd Fleet. 3 years later, he was promoted to commodore.
He continued to make recomendations on various ideas that he came up with during his off-hours; in fact, he made so many recomendations that in 2352 Starfleet Command transferred him back to R&D and placed him in charge of a special ops division.
Ten years later, he was promoted to rear admiral and made an Assistant Director of the Terraforming Division. He was primarily responsible for overseeing the terraforming projects on planets and large moons near potentially hostile areas, i.e. Tholian space, Federation/Romulan Neutral Zone, the DMZ. While he was "officially" just overseeing those planets and moons that needed to be developed rapidly so the Federation could establish a good claim on the system, and use it to handle overpopluated areas of the Federation, in secret Solen was to ensure that the system could be used for rapid defense if the situation in that region ever turned hostile.
In 2372, when tensions started rising among Alpha and Beta Quadrent powers in what has been deemed by some as the "Founder Scare", Solen was transferred to the Strategic Operations Division at Starfleet Command as an Assistant Chief.
When war broke out with the Dominion, Solen was instrumental in planning several key Allied victories, including several strikes on Dominion shipyards early on in the war.
In 2375, Solen was promoted to vice admiral, and four years later was promoted to admiral and made dean of Starfleet Academy.
